La Sociedad de Estadística e Investigación Operativa (SEIO) abre el plazo para la presentación de candidaturas a las Medallas de la SEIO en esta edición. Su concesión se regirá por las bases publicadas en la presente convocatoria.
Con las Medallas de la SEIO se pretende reconocer la labor de socias y socios de la SEIO que hayan contribuido de forma relevante y continuada al avance y proyección de la Estadística y de la Investigación Operativa como disciplinas científicas, tanto en el ámbito nacional como internacional.
Se concederá un máximo de dos Medallas de la SEIO. Cada una de las medallas se acompañará de un diploma acreditativo.
Cada candidatura será presentada por cinco miembros de la SEIO, de acuerdo con los requerimientos recogidos en las bases.
La documentación, redactada en inglés, que se deberá aportar para presentar una candidatura a las Medallas de la SEIO es la siguiente:
- Hoja de identificación de la nominación. En ella se incluirá el nombre y apellidos de la persona propuesta, y los datos identificativos y firmas de las cinco personas que avalan la candidatura. Las personas avalistas no podrán pertenecer al Consejo Ejecutivo ni a ninguno de los Consejos Académicos de la SEIO y deberán ser de cinco entidades distintas.
- Breve presentación de la trayectoria de la persona propuesta (máximo 5 páginas con letra Times New Roman, tamaño 11pt, espaciado 1,5 y márgenes normales) que destaque su contribución relevante y continuada al avance y proyección de la correspondiente disciplina.
- Currículum detallado (se admite CVN) de la persona propuesta.
Dicha documentación se enviará, en formato comprimido, en un único correo electrónico a la dirección de la Secretaría de la SEIO (oficina@seio.es) antes de las 14:00 horas (hora peninsular) del día 5 de mayo de 2023.
Finalizado el plazo de presentación de candidaturas, si se detectaran errores subsanables en una candidatura se requerirá a la persona responsable de la misma que, en el plazo de 10 días naturales, subsane dichos errores para que la candidatura pueda ser finalmente admitida.
La convocatoria se resolverá antes del 15 de julio de 2023.

The Fundamentos Research Program targets exploratory projects that innovatively address the core or fundamental questions of a scientific field or discipline at its current stage of development, or questions of the same fundamental nature emerging from the intersection of various disciplines. The purpose of this call is to provide funding for the conduct of research projects addressing the fundaments of one of more knowledge areas of those listed below: Physics, Chemistry Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Sciences, Artificial Intelligence Biology and Biomedicine Environmental Science Social Sciences (Economics, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, Legal Sciences, Cultural and Social Anthropology, Linguistics) The Fundamentos Program is open to projects led by up to three principal investigators from one or more disciplines, and incorporating researchers attached to centers in any country.A maximum of 5 grants will be awarded for a gross amount of up to 600,000 euros per project. EMS Young Academy (EMYA)
The European Mathematical Society is delighted to announce the launch of its Young Academy (EMYA). The first cohort of 30 early career mathematicians, spanning 18 countries a broad spectrum of mathematical fields, had its inaugural meeting on 6th March. More information here (link)

29th Nordic Congress of Mathematicians – with the EMS
The meeting will be held 3-7 July 2023 in Aalborg, Denmark, and marks the 150th anniversary of the Danish Mathematical Society whose foundation dates back to 1873. There will be 8 plenary talks (including an EMS distinguished speaker), and 29 special sessions. Participation is possible both online and onsite, and registration is open now, with Early Bird registration extended to 30th April. There are substantial discounts for individual EMS members and members of the Nordic mathematical societies.
NEWS FROM EMS COMMITTEES
Executive Committee
The Executive committee held its first meeting of the year on 10-11 March in Copenhagen, the first meeting with new President Jan Philip Solovej in the Chair. A report from this meeting will follow in a future edition of the EMS Magazine. A report from the previous October 2022 meeting can be read in the latest edition of the magazine (link).
Committee for Applications and Interdisciplinary Relations (CAIR)
- A CAIR proposal to establish a prize for mathematical software, as a joint prize of the EMS and ECMI (European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry) has been approved by the ECMI council as well as by the EC of the EMS. The Lanczos prize for mathematical software is expected to be awarded for the first time at the 9ECM Congress in Sevilla in 2024.
- CAIR organised an ERC (European Research Council) information session about the mathematics panel PE1, featuring recent ERC grantees Annalisa Buffa and Daniel Peterseim and a talk by Maria Gonzalez from the ERC, at the SIAM CSE conference in Amsterdam, February 26 – March 3, 2023.
Education Committee
The EMS Education Committee’s 2023 Summer School for school students has been announced, and will be held Kraków, 3-8 July 2023. Further information and the application process is available here (link). Please dissemminate this opportunity to promising high school students.
Raising Public Awareness (RPA)
The RPA committee has new members. Dr Katie Chicot began chairing the committee in January 2023. Katie is the CEO of the charity MathsWorldUK (link), which has launched MathsCity, the UKS’s first hands on maths centre in Leeds (link). She is also a Senior Lecturer, Staff tutor in Mathematics and Statistics at the Open University. Both roles involve mathematics outreach.
The RPA committee also welcomed new members from around Europe: Can Ozan Oguz (Galatasaray University), Maria de Fátima Rodrigues (FCT-UNL, Lisbon), Constanza Rojas-Molina (Université de Cergy-Pontoise), Olga Paris-Romaskevich (CNRS affectée à l’Institut de Mathématiques de Marseille de l’Université Aix-Marseille), Sandra Lucente (Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro), Arghir Zarnescu (BCAM, Bilbao).

The MaRDI consortium (link) is dedicated to building infrastructures to make mathematical research data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). It is thus essential for the success of the project to engage as many members of the mathematics community as possible early on. London Mathematical Society and Isaac Newton Institute
The London Mathematical Society and Isaac Newton Institute are offering three Solidarity schemes for researchers in the mathematical sciences who have to leave their country of residence. The aim is not only to offer participants a safe home but also to enable them to continue their work and start new scientific collaborations. More information here (link).
Abel Prize
We congratulate Luis A. Caffarelli who has won the 2023 Abel Prize «for his seminal contributions to regularity theory for nonlinear partial differential equations including free-boundary problems and the Monge–Ampère equation.» More information here (link).
Fermat Prize – call for nominations
The Fermat Prize rewards the research of mathematicians in the fields:
- statements of variational principles
- foundations of the calculus of probabilities and of analytic geometry
- number theory.
Its spirit is to recognise results which are accessible to the greatest number of professional mathematicians. Since 1989, The Fermat Prize is awarded every two years by the Institute of Mathematics of Toulouse, under the aegis of Université Paul Sabatier. | Las Becas Leonardo a Investigadores y Creadores Culturales Fundación BBVA están destinadas a apoyar el desarrollo de proyectos personales de investigadores y creadores culturales en estadios intermedios de su carrera, de entre 30 y 45 años y con una producción científica, tecnológica o cultural altamente innovadora. Los proyectos tendrán una duración mínima de 12 meses y máxima de 18 meses.
