V International Workshop on Proximity Data, Multivariate Analysis and Classification

V International Workshop on Proximity Data, Multivariate Analysis and Classification

Annual meeting of the SEIO Working Group on Multivariate Analysis and Classification, AMyC. Valladolid, July 11 – 12, 2023.

The V International Workshop on Proximity Data, Multivariate Analysis and Classification will take place during July, 11-12, 2023 in Valladolid (Spain). It is organized by the Spanish Group on Multivariate Analysis and Classification, AMyC-SEIO (https://amyc.seio.es/), which is a Working Group of more than 70 researchers from all the Spanish universities. Every year (except for the pandemic period), the Working Group organizes a meeting to promote the communication between its members and between them and other researchers, and to contribute to the development of the Multivariate Analysis and Classification field and related problems and applications. Previous meetings were held in Granada, Barcelona and Salamanca (https://amyc.seio.es/workshops/).

The topics of interest comprise any related problem to Multivariate Analysis and Classification both from a theoretical or a computational point of view, and their applications. It therefore includes topics related to unsupervised or supervised statistical learning and also those related to big data analysis.

Researchers and practitioners are invited to present works in the form of oral communications through the conference website http://amyc.uva.es/. Abstract submission is already open and the deadline is April 30th, 2023.

Confirmed invited speakers:

Salvatore Ingrassia (Università degli Studi di Catania)

Abstract:
The purpose of XAI-Healthcare 2023 event is to provide a place for intensive discussion on all aspects of eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) in the medical and healthcare field. This should result in cross-fertilization among research on Machine Learning, Decision Support Systems, Natural Language, Human-Computer Interaction, and Healthcare sciences. This meeting will also provide attendees with an opportunity to learn more on the progress of XAI in healthcare and to share their own perspectives. The panel discussion will provide participants with the insights on current developments and challenges from the researchers working in this fast-developing field.

Motivation:
Explainable AI (XAI) aims to address the problem of understanding how decisions are made by AI systems by designing formal methods and frameworks for easing their interpretation. The impact of AI in clinical settings and the trust placed in such systems by clinicians have been a growing concern related to the risk of introducing AI into the healthcare environment. Explainable AI in healthcare is a multidisciplinary area addressing this challenge by combining AI technologies, cognitive modelling, healthcare science, ethical and legal issues. Therefore, this workshop aims to outline future directions for XAI and highlight the importance of developing algorithmic solutions that can enable XAI driven decision making in high-stakes healthcare problems.

On March 20, 16.30 (CET), Jacek Gondzio will give a talk at the Online Seminar Series Machine Learning NeEDS Mathematical Optimization, https://congreso.us.es/mlneedsmo/

Title: Applications of Interior Point methods: from Sparse Approximations to Discrete Optimal Transport
Abstract: A variety of problems in modern applications of optimization require a selection of a ‘sparse’ solution, a vector with preferably few nonzero entries.  Such problems may originate from very different applications in computational statistics, signal or image processing or compressed sensing, finance, machine learning and discrete optimal transport, to mention just a few. Sparse approximation problems are often solved with dedicated and highly specialised first-order methods of optimization. In this talk I will argue that these problems may be very efficiently solved by the more reliable optimization techniques which involve some use of the (inexact) second-order information as long as this is combined with appropriately chosen iterative techniques of linear algebra, such as for example methods from the Krylov-subspace family. Two particular classes of methods, the Newton Conjugate Gradient and the Interior Point Method will be interpreted as suitable homotopy type approaches and will be applied to solve problems arising from: compressed sensing, multi-period portfolio optimization, classification of data coming from functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, restoration of images corrupted by Poisson noise, classification via regularized logistic regression, and discrete optimal transport. In all these cases, the performance of the proposed methods will be compared against competitive first-order methods. Computational evidence will be provided to demonstrate that specialized second-order methods compare favourably and often outperform the cutting-edge first-order methods.
