Title: Introduction to Optimization and Operator Theory

Speaker: GEBRIE Anteneh Getachew (Debre Berhan University)

Abstract: An introductory lecture on operator and optimization theory will be given. To be specific, various notions of derivatives for mappings between Normed spaces will be discussed, with a special emphasis on mappings taking values in R connecting derivatives with optimization problems. We discuss the continuity, lower semicontinuity, differentiability, and, most importantly, optimization properties of convex functions in normed spaces. We will also go over the Fenchel conjugate and biconjugate for convex functions, as well as their properties. With these tools at our disposal, we move on to the duality methods in optimization, which allows us to solve unconstrained and constrained minimization problems (called the primal) by relating them to their dual problems obtained via the Fenchel conjugate. Finally, after discussing the Moreau proximity operator in Hilbert spaces, we will look at a popular class of optimization algorithms.

3rd International Workshop on Stochastic Processes and their Applications, IWSPA 2023

Dear members of the Society,

The organizing committee has the pleasure of inviting you to participate in the 3rd International Workshop on Stochastic Processes and Their Applications (IWSPA 2023), which will take place virtually and online on January on 12th, 17th, 19th, and 24th, 2023 using video conferencing tools.

The workshop is organized by the Working Group on «Stochastic Processes and Their Applications» of the Spanish Society of Statistics and Operations Research (SEIO).

We welcome contributions from all areas of stochastic processes, including, but not limited to birth and death processes, branching processes, diffusion processes, Markovian arrival processes, matrix-analytic methods, random walks in continuous time, renewal theory, space-time processes, long–range dependence random fields, infinite–dimensional processes and others, as well as their applications in population dynamics, genetics, epidemiology, cancer, cell kinetics, economics, finance, reliability, geophysics, environment, etc.

The program will consist of four 45-minute keynote talks and twenty 30-minute contributed talks. The confirmed keynote speakers are the following:

– Gerold Alsmeyer, University of Muenster, Germany.
– Raul Gouet, University of Chile, Chile.
– Qi-Ming He, University of Waterloo, Canada
– Enrica Pirozzi, University of Naples Federico II, Italy.

December 12, 16.30 (CET) @ Online Seminar Series Machine Learning NeEDS Mathematical Optimization

Dear colleagues,

On December 12, 16.30 (CET), Francisco Barahona will give a talk at the Online Seminar Series Machine Learning NeEDS Mathematical Optimization,

Title: Packing hypertrees and the k-cut problem in Hypergraphs

Abstract: We give a combinatorial algorithm to find a maximum packing of hypertrees in a capacitated hypergraph. Based on this we extend to hypergraphs several algorithms for the k-cut problem, that are based on packing spanning trees in a graph. In particular, we give a γ-approximation algorithm for hypergraphs of rank  γ, extending the work of Ravi and Sinha [24] for graphs. We also extend the work of Chekuri, Quanrud and Xu [7] in graphs, to give an algorithm for the k-cut problem in hypergraphs that is polynomial if k and the rank of the hypergraph are fixed. We also give a combinatorial algorithm to solve a linear programming relaxation of this problem in hypergraphs.

Looking forward to e-seeing you there!

EURO Support for NATCOR Bursaries

NATCOR (, a National Taught Course Centre in Operational Research, delivers taught courses to PhD students, from across Europe, on a number of different topics in OR.

EURO is advertising a competition for bursaries for courses run in 2023.
*Stochastic Modelling – Lancaster University, April
*Simulation – University of Southampton, July
*Combinatorial Optimisation – University of Southampton, September

The NATCOR course fees and accommodation (if applicable) will be funded by EURO for successful candidates.

Typically, accommodation for any residential courses will be four nights bed and breakfast. If additional accommodation is required, candidates will need to arrange and pay for this. Also any extra costs incurred will need to be settled personally.

Please also be reminded that successful candidates requiring visas will need to apply for these in good time.

Applicants must be PhD students, from one of the EURO member countries or studying in one of the EURO member
countries (see
Applicants must have good English Language skills as all NATCOR courses will be in English. Preference will be given to students in their first or second years but all are welcome to apply.
Preference will also be given to applicants who have not previously received support from EURO for NATCOR or other PhD schools.

To apply for a bursary, candidates from a EURO member society country, or studying in a EURO member society country, should submit a zip file containing the application form, their curriculum vitae (including their academic track record), a letter outlining their motivation to attend, and a letter of recommendation from their supervisor. Applicants should declare on their application if they are receiving any additional support from their PhD funding body or other sponsor.

Selection Process
The EURO VP2 selects and ranks (in the case of more than one accepted from the same country) the candidates. When accepting the candidates the VP2 should aim at a good distribution of the participants among the EURO member societies.
