Cooperación al Desarrollo SEIO

La SEIO en relación con la cooperación y el desarrollo  incluye entre sus objetivos fomentar las actividades de difusión y promoción de la estadística y la investigación operativa en países en vías de desarrollo.

Inicialmente integrados en una comisión específica de Cooperación y Desarrollo, las actividades relacionadas han sido incluidas dentro de la Comisión de Relaciones Externas y Cooperación.

New! Call for CIMPA Schools 2025

The call for projects for 2024 CIMPA schools is open. The project proposals must be submitted online by October 10, 2023. The webform will be available before this summer. To prepare your application, we advise you have a look at the pdf version to see the requested information and details about the project and budget. The final selection phase of the projects will be completed by the beginning of February 2024.

During the preparation phase of the application, it is strongly advised to contact one of the scientific officers of your specific geographical area. In addition to ideas and contacts, this person will help you to check that you comply with the criteria below.

Generally, CIMPA financial support constitutes up to 50% of the total budget and can reach a maximum amount of €20,000. At least 1/2 of CIMPA budget is specifically allocated to supporting participants from developing countries outside the host country. The eligibility criteria are the necessary criteria for your school to be considered. The evaluation criteria determine its acceptance. The financial support depends on the profile of each school, taking as a basis the economic situation of the host country and adjusting it according to the other evaluation criteria.

The Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées (CIMPA), founded in France in 1978, is a nonprofit organisation that promotes research in Mathematics in developing countries. Located in Nice, it is a UNESCO Category 2 centre and  is part of the Laboratoire d’Excellence CARMIN (Centres d’Accueil et de Rencontres Mathématiques Internationales). It benefits from the financial support of Germany, France, Norway, Spain and Switzerland.

CIMPA co-organises and sponsors numerous activities in developing countries, in all continents. Each activity is funded through a process of calls for proposals in one of the following categories:

  • CIMPA Schools: This is the historical activity of CIMPA, it focuses on areas where there is a real drive to develop mathematics and where there is a scope for a research project. Calls for proposals are launched every year to organise about twenty CIMPA Schools per year.
  • CIMPA Courses: This program consists in funding the organisation of master and research level courses in mathematics within the geographic areas of activities of CIMPA (Africa, Central and South America, Asia). Every year, two calls for proposals are launched with deadlines in early January and early July.
  • CIMPA Fellowships: CIMPA funds the participation of young mathematicians from developing countries to short-term thematic international programs organised by some of our partner institutions. A call for applications is opened for each program.

CIMPA also strongly supports activities developed in close collaboration with continental mathematical unions, such as Schools in Partnership, the purpose of which is to introduce undergraduate and Master students to research in mathematics. For most of its activities, CIMPA works in partnership with other organisations with similar objectives, such as  the International Mathematical Union (IMU), the European Mathematical Society (EMS) and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP).

EMS Simons Foudantion for Africa

A call is open for EMS-Simons grants for academic visits for experienced researchers and PhD students based in Africa, during 2023:

A program for scientific visits of young and established researchers from the African Continent administered by the EMS Committee for Developing Countries.

The EMS Committee for Developing Countries, with support from the Simons Foundation, offers funding for research visits for young and established researchers at African academic institutions to help them build their research profile. The aim of the project is to improve global research capacity in African academic institutions. The program is open to all areas of pure and applied mathematics and statistics and it is open to applicants based in Africa.

Open calls:

  • A. Collaborative research visits
    • A1. Continuation in research, to support established researchers (PhD holders) to make short visits (typically 1 to 3 months) to international collaborators in the Global North, within Africa or elsewhere
    • A2. PhD development grants, to support students actively involved in a PhD programme on the African continent to visit a co-supervisor or collaborator
  • B. Top-up grants for women, to offer female applicants to our A1 and A2 grants help with extra costs such as childcare expenses
  • C. Top-up grants for conference participation, to offer A2 applicant PhD students (applying for visits of at least 2 months) additional funding for participation at a conference or event organized in the target country or region

Our grants range between 1000-3000 USD on the main A1-A2 calls, plus top-ups. All visits have to conclude by the end of 2023.

Trabajos desarrollados y oportunidades para la cooperación

Entre otras actividades, actualmente se está desarrollando un Máster en Estadística en la Universidade Pedagógica de Maputo (Mozambique) (desde 2012), en que la SEIO actúa en red facilitando contactos entre sus miembros.

Diversas entidades ofrecen oportunidades y actividades de Cooperación al Desarrollo en el ámbito universitario. A continuación se muestran las páginas web más importantes y que recogen la mayor parte de la información.

  • El Observatorio de la Cooperación Universitaria al Desarrollo (OCUD) de la CRUE, mantiene en su página web una lista actualizada de recursos, estudios y convocatorias para financiar actividades de cooperación al desarrollo de entidades de España.
  • Entre los recursos más destacados están las becas MAEC-AECID  para Latinoamérica, África, Oriente Medio y Filipinas, que se convocan anualmente para seguir en España estudios de Máster o de investigación.
  • El CIMPA (Centro de Investigación en Matemática Pura y Aplicada), es una organización internacional sin fines de lucro (cátedra UNESCO) establecida en Niza (Francia) desde 1978. Su objetivo es promover la cooperación internacional en la educación superior y la investigación en matemáticas y otros temas relacionados en beneficio de los países en desarrollo. España forma parte del CIMPA (el MINECO como miembro estatutario), y en concreto la SEIO como miembro institucional, con un representante en el Comité de Pilotaje y Seguimiento. El CIMPA organiza regularmente mediante convocatorias abiertas anuales, Escuelas de Investigación y financia actividades de Formación en Investigación.
  • La EMS tiene una comisión para países en desarrollo, que entre otras cosas apoya eventos, financia estancias de investigadoras e investigadores de África en países de mayor desarrollo (programa financiado por la Simons Foundation)…
  • Dentro de EURO hay un grupo de trabajo en Cooperación al Desarrollo EWG-ORD que desarrolla distintas actividades, entre ellas habitualmente un workshop antes de los congresos.
  • IFORS organiza los congresos ICORD (International Conference on OR for Development) y convoca el premio IFORS for OR in Development.
  • La International Mathematical Union (IMU) tiene una CDC (Commission for Developing Countries) que desarrolla múltiples actividades y premios. Entre ellas se encuentra un Programa de Profesores Voluntarios (Volunteer Lecture Programme) a través del cual se pueden realizar estancias en países en desarrollo para impartir cursos de corta duración (o solicitar desde un país en desarrollo la visita de un profesor).
  • Finalmente, existe una organización no gubernamental para la promoción de la Estadística, Statistics Without Borders (SWB), aparece ligado a la American Statistical Association, pero no es necesario pertenecer a ella para formar parte de SWB.
