Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Statistical Science, University of Bristol

Join us at this exciting time and you’ll be working alongside world leading academics in the Institute of Statistical Sciences at the University of Bristol. The Institute is one of five recently launched institutes within the School of Mathematics, each a centre for excellence with interests spanning a broad range of areas and numerous collaborations with other disciplines. Apply now and you will be moving with us to our new £33m outstanding home for the mathematical sciences at the heart of the University’s beautiful campus.

We seek to attract a number of outstanding candidates for a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Statistical Science tenable from the summer of 2017 or a date to be agreed. (A Lectureship is roughly equivalent to an assistant/associate professorship). We seek applicants who have demonstrated, or show potential for, the highest achievements in research in any area of mainstream Statistical Science or cognate areas (e.g. applied probability, machine learning, data science and biostatistics). The successful candidate(s) will possess the skills and enthusiasm to contribute to our existing comprehensive training programs in Statistical Science at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The post will give ambitious researchers and teachers an outstanding opportunity to develop and extend further their interests and career. Appointments are permanent, subject to the University's standard probationary and promotion procedures. The Institute of Statistical Science has recently made a number of appointments at the junior and senior level and, as part of a strategic expansion in the mathematical sciences, seeks to continue this initiative in statistical and data science.

The School of Mathematics is one of the leading centres for research and teaching in mathematics in the UK. In addition to the Institute of Statistical Science, there are four other new Institutes: Probability, Analysis and Dynamical Systems, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Physics and Pure Mathematics. In the 2014 UK Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) assessment, the School was rated 4th overall and 2nd for impact when “intensity” is taken into account. The School has strong links with the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research, which supports activities in Statistical Sciences among others, funds over twenty postdoctoral researchers, and runs a co-ordinated series of seminars, research programmes, conferences and workshops.
With a population of over 400,000, Bristol is the largest city in the South West and the region’s leading centre for business, culture and education. Bristol recently came top in the 2013 MoneySuperMarket's "Quality of Living Index" ranking with the quote "Bristol beats other cities hands down" and in "The Sunday Times" "Best Places to Live in Britain" 2014.

The School of Mathematics is a supporter of the LMS Good Practice Scheme aiming at advancing women's careers in mathematics and we therefore particularly welcome applications from women for this post.
