NONPARAMETRIC INCIDENCE ESTIMATION AND BOOTSTRAP BANDWIDTH SELECTION IN MIXTURE CURE MODELS

ANA LÓPEZ-CHEDA, RICARDO CAO, M. AMALIA JÁCOME, INGRID VAN KEILEGOM

This paper, inspired by data on cancer survival, proposes an alternative nonparametric approach to modelling the survival of cancer sufferers where the cured proportion is incorporated in the biostatistical model. The authors excel in their careful theoretical treatment of the mixture of cured and not-cured patients, compare their new approach to existing ones, and apply their mixture cure survival model to a real data set of colonorectal cancer patients.

CONSTRUCT, MERGE, SOLVE & ADAPT: A NEW GENERAL ALGORITHM FOR COMBINATORIAL OPTIMIZATION

This paper presents a new general metaheuristic framework with a clever inclusion of problem reductions (subproblems) and intermediate exact solutions. The results of these subproblems are used to improve the resolution process. This paper illustrates, through the use of interesting test cases, how the metaheuristic can be applied to a wide range of contexts.

CRIME AGAINST WOMEN IN INDIA: UNVEILING SPATIAL PATTERNS AND TEMPORAL TRENDS OF DOWRY DEATHS IN THEDISTRICTS OF UTTAR PRADESH

This is an innovative paper that through statistical methods allows to better understand a societal problem of epidemic proportions according to the World Health Organization and is particularly complex in India. The innovation the paper relies on the analysis of the dowry deaths at sub-state level (district), trying to disentangle spatial and temporal patterns as well as assessing the role of covariates representing the socio-demographic characteristics of the area.

SOLVING A LARGE CUTTING PROBLEM IN THE GLASS MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY

The authors solve a large-size glass cutting problem by means of a sophisticated beam search algorithm using a tree structure, and obtain high-quality solutions on test instances. The problem was put forward by Saint-Gobain Glass France as part of an international Operations Research challenge in which the authors ranked among the top contenders.

CLUSTERING TIME SERIES BY LINEAR DEPENDENCY

This paper proposes an innovative new methodology to identify clusters in large vectors of time series by using the cross generalization which measures similarity between two time series. The procedure is automatic and can be applied to large data sets. It can find groups in dynamic factor models.
