Principal Statistician/Modeller for Environmental Science (BioSS 02-18)

BioSS has a senior position available to act as lead in the application area of Environmental Science (including ecology). The post represents an excellent opportunity for an experienced statistician or mathematical modeller, offering a stimulating mix of work involving: collaboration with environmental scientists and other quantitative experts within BioSS and elsewhere; a generous time allocation within which to develop their own area of quantitative methodological research; and the opportunity to contribute actively to the management and development of BioSS. BioSS has recently become eligible for general UKRI funding, so this presents further opportunities for a successful applicant.

This position will be based within the BioSS group at the Aberdeen site of the James Hutton Institute, providing the best opportunities for collaborative working with applied scientists. BioSS also encourages collaborative working with staff at other sites to provide flexibility in matching skillsets with requirements of scientific applications. Our focus on solving real-world problems and close working relationships with a wide range of users makes BioSS a truly exciting place in which to work.

The post will be offered at Hutton Grade F (principal scientist, salary range £48,000 - £61,000).

Our ideal candidate for the post will have:

- a PhD in statistics or other quantitative discipline, or an MSc with commensurate post-qualification development and work experience;
- a strong track record of collaborative working at the interface between the quantitative and biological sciences, corroborated by co-authored papers in scientific journals;
- evidence of leadership in management and motivation of staff; a promising track record of successful funding applications;
- and the ability to communicate positively, effectively and confidently beyond their own discipline. This is a permanent appointment.

All individuals wishing to work within the UK must be entitled to do so before they can be employed.

Further information on the above post, including how to apply, is available on the BioSS website at

Closing date: 24 September 2018; interviews will take place in Aberdeen shortly after this date.
