Applications are invited for fully-funded and self-funded PhD positions for October 2019 intake (Deadline: 31/05/2019) The University of Strathclyde is delighted to announce the establishment of the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Data Science for Studying Science, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (DS4SIE). The CDT aims to train the next generation of researchers who will design, develop and test novel, advanced and generalizable data science approaches and by doing so, will provide answers to substantial questions relating to the study of science, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The CDT is a multidisciplinary endeavour bringing together faculty from Strathclyde Business School ( Dr Abdullah Gök and Prof Sara Carter), Computer and Information Science (Dr Yashar Moshfeghi) and Mathematics and Statistics (Dr Young-Ho Eom). The PhD students will be registered to the PhD programmes in Entrepreneurship, Computer and Information Science or Mathematics & Statistics depending on the requirements of their project (see details below). As well as the training provided in their registered degree programme, the PhD students will be able to be able to attend to a selection of the classes from the MSc Data Analytics and/or MSc Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Technology courses depending on their background, training needs and research projects. Successful applicants will also be a part of a vibrant and rapidly emerging research group on data science for studying science, innovation and entrepreneurship consisting of a number of PhD students, research assistants, postdoctoral researchers, primary supervisors as well as other associated faculty. The research group will provide specialist customised training to the PhD students on data science. Furthermore, the research group has a number of large-scale active research projects and upcoming proposals, which will provide hands-on training. As part of the research group’s EU funded RISIS project, the PhD students will also be able to attend a range of methodological traininga> offered by the consortium. PhD students will have the opportunity to engage with external stakeholders. The CDT is partnered with prestigious practitioner organisations such as Nesta and Data Lab, who will provide the PhD students summer internship opportunities to expose them to industry and policy related projects and to gain on-the-job training. Topics of the initial four studentships:

  • Position A: Studying social innovation as a new form of innovation:
  • Position B: The impact of enterprise policy
  • Position C: Data Science of Social Innovation:
  • Position D: Network Science of Science, Innovation and Entrepreneurship:

We are initially seeking four fully funded PhD students to commence studies in October 2019. We also welcome additional self funded or externally funded applications. All applications should be submitted by 31/05/2019. We advise applications to be submitted as soon as possible as we will start conducting skype and/or face-to-face interviews for shortlisted applicants immediately.
